The global expansion of video games has driven development studios to prioritize linguistic accessibility through translation, particularly by adapting cultural elements to avoid misunderstandings or offense. This paper examines video game localisation processes, illustrating strategies used to adjust games for different cultures, including addressing religious symbols, offensive language, and stereotypes. A key framework for understanding these practices is Vermeer’s Skopostheorie, which focuses on translating with the target audience in mind, emphasizing cultural norms, linguistic nuances, and player expectations.
The paper presents examples that underscore the importance of cultural adaptation, while detailing the different types of assets in video games, especially textual ones, each requiring distinct localisation strategies like domestication, foreignization, or transcreation, depending on the game’s cultural richness and genre.
This research highlights the structured procedures involved and synthesises case studies from various games to demonstrate effective localisation strategies and concludes by calling for more research to establish video game localisation as a crucial aspect of Translation Studies, helping refine best practices in the field.
