Keywords:

The early use of smartphones is constantly increasing among children and adolescents, generating educational opportunities but also risks for socio-emotional development. The aim of this essay is to examine the role of affordances and digital design in influencing children's usage practices and their effects on well-being. Through an interdisciplinary theoretical analysis based on scientific literature (psychology, sociology, media studies) and the application of the concept of affordance (Gibson, Norman) to digital technologies, it is highlighted that smartphone interfaces, designed to maximize engagement in the attention economy, guide interaction in an intuitive way and can promote addiction. At the same time, when integrated into positive educational and relational contexts, they offer opportunities for learning and socialization. In conclusion, it emerges that the impact of smartphones on childhood depends on usage practices and interface design. Complementary approaches such as safety by design and media education are essential for promoting sustainable digital experiences that are oriented toward the well-being and critical education of young users.
